POSITION TITLE:  Mpower Program Assistant

 

REPORTS TO:  Mpowerment Coordinator

 

STATUS:  Non-Exempt

 

JOB SUMMA

Assist in the coordination of a multi level intervention HIV prevention program aimed at men who have sex with men with an emphasis on community building and empowerment activities among gay and bisexual men ages 18-29

 

MEASURABLE PRODUCTION GUIDELI

  • Assist the Adam and Steve coordinator and facilitator with the following programmatic activities : plan and lead social events, discussion groups, and fundraising events; work with Core Group of volunteers and to coordinate all aspects of the program; develop marketing campaigns and materials; facilitate a health education/risk reduction group; serve as a peer mentor and resource for young gay and bisexual men.
  • Engage in HIV prevention outreach at area bars, adult bookstores, and in online Internet forums. 
  • Recruit young men who have sex with men to become involved in program activities.
  • Collect and record program and participant data as required.

 

QUALIF

Education and Experience:  Must have minimum of one year college education or six months relevant experience in paid/volunteer work on HIV-related or gay community issues or equivalent combination of education and experience.  

 

Communication Skills:  Communicate effectively in oral and written form with program participants, agency staff, other service agencies, and the general public and possess strong active listening skills.  Must be comfortable discussing sexually explicit subjects.  Must be comfortable facilitating groups.

 

Equipment: 

  • Ability to operate proficiently a personal computer, fax machine, printer, and copier. 
  • Access to own transportation.
  • Lifting Requirement – minimum of 25 lbs

 

 

Certifications and Clearances:  Valid driver's license; proof of auto insurance.    Background check and TB test.

 

Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Must have demonstrated leadership qualities.  Must be knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS prevention with gay men, gay male sexuality, and gay male issues. Must be creative and energetic.    Must show initiative and be able to work independently as needed.  Must be familiar with the local young gay/bi male community.  Must be able to work effectively and sensitively with homosexually active men of various social-cultural backgrounds and levels of homosexual identification.  Must be able to work collaboratively in a team setting.  Must be comfortable discussing sexual issues and subjects with a wide range of persons.  Must be able to work evenings and weekends as necessary. Skills in group facilitation, community organizing, materials and/or web design, and event planning a plus.    

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Oversee Adam and Steve program: plan and lead social events, discussion groups, and fundraising events; work with Core Group of volunteers and Community Advisory Board to coordinate all aspects of the program; develop marketing campaigns and materials; facilitate a health education/risk reduction group; serve as a peer mentor and resource for young gay and bisexual men.
  • Plan and execute social and fundraising events.
  • Facilitate various meetings, discussion groups, and HIV prevention related groups and trainings.
  • Recruit and mentor new members and volunteers.
  • Maintain member database and communicate with members on a regular basis
  • Lead outreach team in bar outreach.
  • Conduct Internet outreach in online chat rooms.
  • Plan, create, and conduct social marketing campaigns.
  • Create and distribute marketing materials and keep promotion tools updated.
  • Engage in qualitative program analysis and compile and maintain data as directed.
  • Lead HIV testing campaign among target population.
  • Meet regularly with team members and supervisor.
  • Compile monthly, quarterly and annual statistics on participants and programs.
