PREVENTION PROGRAMS
Prevention has come a long way since the days when prevention mostly meant handing out condoms at Health Fairs. Today, HIV prevention is a science that seeks to build scientifically proven programs that are targeted to communities and populations most at risk. Prevention efforts in the United States are spearheaded by the Centers for Disease Control. The CDC model calls for each state to have a Prevention and Planning Group (PPG) to set prevention priorities within their states. We are proud at the Four As to have an excellent working relationship with the Alaska Prevention Planning Group, and we closely follow their guidelines on targeting populations and communities within Alaska most at risk for HIV.

Those groups most at risk in Alaska closely mirror those most at risk across America. These groups are Men who Sex with Men (MSM), Injection Drug Users and their partners, Ethnic Minorities (especially women and youth), Prisoners, Homeless Persons, Sex Workers, and those under the influence of alcohol and drugs. We have programs that target each of these populations. A thought provoking cartoon from The Body .com
